Centrica: Net zero industry is booming

Everybody has a role to play in net zero said Jean-Yves Cherruault, Head of Net Zero Pathways at Centrica.

In an interview with future Net Zero at last month's Big Zero Show, Mr Cherruault said that we need both, clarity and certainty from political leaders and technical expertise from big businesses like Centrica to reach net zero.

The public and private sectors must work together to help organisations and the energy industry in understanding the risks, opportunities and technologies that will come with decarbonisation.

On hydrogen, he said: "In our minds, hydrogen will play a role along with other technologies and energy sources. Ultimately, replacing fossil fuels is difficult because they've got credentials and attributes which make them a very easy and efficient form of energy."

When thinking about alternative energy sources, he said we must ask four questions: "Can the alternative energy source be produced at scale everywhere? Can it be produced at a cost that is acceptable to the market? Is it [the technology] low or zero carbon? And can it be produced without disrupting existing operations?"

Centrica plans to reach net zero by 2045.
