Birla Carbon sets 2050 net zero emissions target

Birla Carbon has announced its ambition to bring down its net carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

The manufacturer of carbon black will commit to evaluate and release interim targets that are aligned with the science-based target initiative and is exploring new and advanced technologies to achieve its goal.

That includes discovering new ways for the capture and conversion of carbons, emphasising on process efficiencies that will convert carbon to carbon black, switching to renewable energy sources to power its facilities and leading sustainability and circularity programmes at scale.

To date, 80% of its manufacturing facilities are housing co-generation facilities for conversion of waste gases to energy for export to the electricity grid.

Earlier this year, Birla Carbon introduced a “first-of-its-kind” sustainable carbonaceous material with the launch of Continua™, representing a “ground-breaking step forward” in the availability and know-how of sustainable solutions in the carbon black industry.

The company claims Continua products, by their circular nature, will enable large and quantifiable carbon footprint reductions, paving the way for greener, cleaner and more sustainable industry value chains.

Over the next five years, around 73,000 tonnes of Continua will be available annually for use in a wide range of applications including tires, mechanical rubber goods, plastics and more.

A lifecycle assessment conducted according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, demonstrates that at full capacity, 228,000 tonnes of direct and indirect CO2 emissions will be eliminated on an annual basis when compared to the conventional carbon black process.

John Loudermilk, Chief Executive Officer, Birla Carbon said: “All businesses have a responsibility to drive improvements for the global environment; however, only by working hand-in-hand with our customers, suppliers and partners through the supply chain can we truly build a greener and brighter future..

“By the nature of our business, we at Birla Carbon have our own carbon stewardship responsibility and we are choosing to lead through bold commitment and industry-first initiatives for a more sustainable tomorrow. Our aim is to constantly innovate and evolve our capabilities through our purpose, 'Share the Strength', to have a positive impact on the ecosystem and society at large.”
