‘Green’ roofs installed on bus stops in Utrecht

In the pursuit of promoting urban biodiversity, the Dutch city of Utrecht has installed sedum-covered roofs at 316 bus stops.

The roofs covered with plant beds capture particulates, store rainwater and provide cooling in hot weather, which is beneficial for various insects including bees.

A government press release stated: “Our city has 316 bus stops with a sedum-covered roof. The bus stops contribute to a healthy living environment in the city and they help raise awareness.

"The sedum-covered roofs benefit us, the residents, but they also help the small animals who call the city their home. Birds and insects are drawn to and delight in green roofs.”

The roof beds are looked after by RBL Outdoor and Clear Channel and generate maintenance revenue through advertisements.
