Firefly Green Fuels, a green energy startup, has developed a novel form of jet fuel derived from human sewage.
The process, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), involves subjecting organic materials, including sewage, to elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of water.
Independent tests conducted by international aviation regulators found the resulting fuel to closely resemble standard fossil jet fuel.
Collaborating with Cranfield University, Firefly's examination of the fuel's life cycle carbon impact revealed a 90% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional jet fuel.
