US grocery store chain installs nearly 3,000 solar panels to power bakery’s operations

US grocery store chain Ralphs and Food 4 Less has announced the installation of nearly 3,000 solar panels to power the operations of the 300,000-square-foot Californian bakery facility.

The project will have a capacity of 1MW and is expected to generate 2,009MWh of clean energy annually, which is equivalent to powering 240 homes for a year or slashing the annual emissions of 300 cars.

The company's manufacturing team has partnered with the subsidiary of Duke Energy, REC Solar to install these panels.

The bakery, which produces bread, buns, doughnuts and English muffins, employs more than 200 people in a seven-day, 24-hour operation.

Erin Sharp, Kroger's Group Vice President of manufacturing, said: "The newest solar installation is another responsible choice that supports our sustainability goals.

"We will continue to explore energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy options that are protective to the Southern California environment and communities we serve across America."
