McDonald’s launches plastic straws-to-swimwear project

Austria's McDonald's branches have launched an initiative to convert plastic straws into swimwear.

This forms part of the food chain giant's strategy to replace plastic straws with recyclable paper alternatives.

The firm has decided to give the old iconic red-and-yellow plastic straws a second life by collaborating with the Austrian fashion brand Poleit, which creates women’s suit and men’s swim shorts made from upcycled fabric.

The items are made from a mix of recycled McDonald's plastic straws and consumer plastic waste taken from the ocean.

McDonald's says the new paper straws will be available at restaurants on request to help contribute to a more sustainable circular economy.
