French energy giant Total to build battery-based storage project in Dunkirk

French energy firm Total has announced the launch of a 25MW battery storage project in Dunkirk’s port district, aimed to provide fast reserve services to the French power grid.

The project, scheduled for an end of year launch, has a storage capacity of 25MW - it is set to be France’s largest lithium-ion energy storage system and will help increase flexibility and security, as well as provide enhanced stability.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of Total said: “This project is part of Total’s strategy to develop the stationary energy storage solutions that are critical to the expansion of renewable energy, which is intermittent by nature.

"It will contribute toward the goal of increasing the share of renewables in France’s energy mix, while helping to stabilize the domestic power grid.”

Total recently announced it was working with BP, Eni, Equinor and Shell to develop the UK’s first net zero industrial cluster.
