Green leader Lucas wants to fight cuts

The Green Party launched its campaign for next month's English local elections by announcing its plans for fighting the coalition's cuts.

Caroline Lucas said: "The local elections are a crucial opportunity for people to elect councillors who will fight to protect the most vulnerable from the savage public spending cuts faced by local government, and who can offer genuine political opposition on the issues that matter to us all."

The party broadcast focused on the lack of trust that the public has in both politics and politicians, and says they want to "rebuild that trust".

Creating solutions to makea difference at the local level is on their agenda and they aimed to show that their coucillors and candidates were making a difference, such as the Warm Zone scheme in Kirklees.

The scheme provide free wall and loft insulation to over 50,000 homes. This was achieved through a budget amendment put by Andrew Cooper, a Green councillor, who helped designed the scheme.

The Green party currently hold 116 seats on 42 Councils. 64 of our seats on 31 Councils are up for re-election.
