North west poised for green collar workforce

What the UK needs is a "green collar workforce to go alongside the white and the blue".

So says Liberal Democrat Richard Marbrow, who stood for Liverpool Riverside at May's general election.

At the Lib Dem conference in Liverpool, Marbrow told ELN that the North West can deliver for the green economy.

"Green economy jobs are going to be a great future. In the north west we have the universities, the research institutions and the facilities to be able to go ahead if our businesses are brave enough."

ELN also caught up with the Liberal Democrats' former London Mayoral candidate Susan Kramer, who praised Energy Secretary Chris Huhne's plans for the Green Deal and a Green Investment Bank and the effect these initiatives are hoped to have on renewable energy.

"There is such a deep commitment to renewable energy," she said. "Finally we have a real possibility of taking on board the development of renewables. Getting the financing in place has always been the missing piece, so to look now at having a mechanism in place to close that gap makes it real."
