“Become net zero – We don’t have to wait till 2050”

Discussions on the right type of carbon removal technology are important. But Drax’s Sales and Marketing Director, Paul Miller, told the audience at the Big Zero Show that such debate is slowing down the conversation. He said: “We need all types just like our grid, you know, we can't just have wind and solar. We need some base load, we need some nuclear, we need some biomass.”

In the UK, we need to remove “up to 100 million tonnes [of carbon] a year between now and 2050.” Although Drax’s Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology can remove eight million tonnes of UK’s carbon, he said: “it’s still just a drop in the ocean.”

Mr Miller stressed on the importance of using all technologies at our disposal to reach net zero.

But, he added: “There seems to be a lack of understanding of what's available and what businesses can do to achieve net zero.”

Mr Miller believes that Drax can help bridge this gap, he said: “What we've done is we've looked at what the scientific community and the facts are telling us and we've tried to enable products to support that.”

He believes that we have all the tools and knowledge at our disposal to reach our net zero targets: “The market is already telling us what we can do to enable net zero. The IPCC is telling us the target that we need to hit and there is a wash of technology available to purchase an engaged to allow us to hit that.

He added: “We just need to pivot and redirect and start engaging with businesses on creating those detailed tactical plans, making them aware of the technology that they can purchase and allowing them to do it.”
