Bristol Council sets £3.3m aside for heat pumps

Bristol City Council is set to spend £3.3 million to install 200 heat pumps in Westbury-on-Trym.

Homes in the area would receive financial backing from the council to replace their gas boilers, in what will be a two-year project.

Training installers in the area and acquiring a local supply chain will also be a focus of the project, with hope to rollout heat pumps in the rest of Bristol.

If the application for government funding is successful the residents will receive £5,000 towards their heat pump installation.

Councillor Kye Dudd explained that the area was selected as many wealthier residents with more energy use live there: “Westbury-on-Trym is outside any future heat network zones, it’s an area where a proportion are likely to be able to make a significant contribution to the cost of a heat pump.

“It’s larger housing so there’s space for heat pumps, and there’s higher energy use than average so the carbon savings are higher. An important element to this is to build trust in heat pump technology, to increase the take-up across the city.”
