Drax signs 2m tonne carbon removal deal

Drax has signed what it claims to be the world’s largest carbon removal deal with Respira International.

Respira will receive two million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide removal certificates from Drax, as part of the deal.

Drax is looking to deliver 12 million tonnes of carbon removal each year by 2030 – with this deal being achieved purely through carbon capture and storage technology.

During a five-year period, Respira will be able to purchase the certificates from Drax.

Will Gardiner, Drax CEO, said: “The clear demand that we are seeing for engineered carbon removals, alongside the policies being developed by progressive governments in the US and UK to support carbon capture and storage, will enable the investment needed to kickstart a vital new sector of the economy, creating tens of thousands of jobs, often in communities which need them the most.”
