Sainsbury’s launches refillable handwash pouches to slash plastic use

Sainsbury's has announced the launch of its own-brand refillable handwash pouches in a bid to help customers reduce the amount of plastic waste in their homes.

The one litre pouches use 85% less plastic and allow consumers to reuse their handwash bottle by refilling from the pouch, estimated to save 28 tonnes of plastic every year.

Customers can take the pouches back to one of Sainsbury's front-of-store flexible plastics recycling points at its supermarkets for recycling.

The initiative is part of Sainsbury's efforts to reduce plastics and supports its ongoing commitment to halve its own-brand plastic packaging by 2025.

The supermarket recently moved its five-pack of Fairtrade bananas from a plastic bag to a paper band, removing 25 million single-use plastic bags.

It will also be switching its double strength squash bottles to quadruple strength squash bottles from July, saving 177 tonnes of plastic.
