Helsinki Olympic Stadium launches new partnership to develop low carbon operations

Helsinki's Olympic Stadium in Finland has signed a partnership agreement with renewable materials company Stora Enso to develop low carbon operations.

Partners will seek to increase the use of renewable materials and circular economy solutions in the stadium, which was built for the 1940 Olympics.

The partnership will firstly focus on customer and food service packaging to reduce the climate impact of stadium operations - for example, used high-quality fibre from paper cups will be recycled for new products.

Marju Paju, Director of Marketing and Communication for Olympic Stadium, said: "The Olympic Stadium is an arena of sustainable development and the circular economy in the built environment as a whole.

"Environmental impact reduction by extending the building’s life cycle was one of the fundamental premises for the whole modernisation and updating of Helsinki Olympic Stadium."

The project is part of Olympic Stadium commitments, which promote the goal of a carbon-neutral Helsinki by 2035 in accordance with the Helsinki city strategy.
