More than 430 electric hybrid buses will clean New York’s air

Hundreds of new electric hybrid buses will soon hit the streets of New York.

The New York Transit Authority will receive 435 electric hybrid power and propulsion systems for its new fleet of transit buses, in a bid to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption.

Developed by the provider of electric propulsion technology BAE Systems, the systems combine motors, energy storage and smart controls for buses and their accessories, such as air conditioning, heat and doors.

An ultracapacitor technology, which will provide efficient energy storage, will also be deployed on the buses.

With fully electrified accessories, each bus will also have a technology, which will allow the bus engine to turn off at stops, while the accessories on board continue to operate on electric power.

Steve Trichka, Vice President and General Manager of Power and Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems: Our Series-E system provides transit operators with a highly reliable, flexible option that brings our state one step closer to a zero-emission future."
