Adelaide aims to be first South Australian council to go 100% renewable

The City of Adelaide says it will be the first South Australian council to power all its operations by 100% renewable electricity from July this year.

The local authority has signed a power purchase agreement that ensures parks, street lighting, buildings, traffic lights, electric vehicle (EV) chargers, water pumps and the Adelaide Town Hall are all powered by renewable energy.

Officials state approximately 75% of the city’s power will be sourced from wind generation and 25% from solar power.

The council’s use of electricity every year is equivalent to the electricity use of 3,800 Adelaide homes.

This project is estimated to save around AUS$300,000 (£161k) on electricity bills and avoid around 760 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to taking 302 petrol cars off the road every year.
