London launches new ‘car-free’ zones to clamp down on emissions

London Bridge, Shoreditch, Euston, Waterloo, Old Street and Holborn will soon see some of their streets transformed into car-free zones.

That's according to a new plan rolled out by Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, who has suggested the capital could soon become one of the largest car-free zones in any capital city in the world.

Authorities aim to increase walking, cycling and improve air quality as the city gradually eases the lockdown measures.

As part of the new transport plan, Waterloo Bridge and London Bridge may be restricted to people walking, cycling and buses only, with pavements widened to enable people to safely travel between busy railway stations and their workplaces.

Another measure which will be reintroduced on 18th May is the Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), to prevent London’s roads from instantly becoming blocked with congestion.

An increase of the Congestion Charge to £15 next month is also proposed.
