Ohio State University pledges to halve carbon emissions by 2030

The Ohio State University has pledged to cut its carbon dioxide emissions in half within this decade in a bid to accelerate its efforts to achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050.

The new plan focuses on improving building energy efficiency, diversifying sources of energy and addressing transportation-related emissions.

Proposals involve extending on-campus solar photovoltaics and other renewable power generation capacity, switching from compressed natural gas to green hydrogen or renewable natural gas and developing a new university-financed air travel emissions offset policy.

Michael V. Drake, President of the Ohio State University, said: “Global climate change presents a clear threat to communities across the globe."

Bruce A. McPheron, Executive Vice President and Provost, commented: “As embodied in our land-grant mission, Ohio State takes an active role in addressing society’s challenges through our teaching, research and outreach.

“By reducing our carbon dioxide emissions, the university is doing its part to minimize the negative impacts that climate change will present over time.”
