Environmentally-friendly Chuck Taylors to hit the shelves

Converse has announced it is to release three lines of environmentally-friendly Chuck Taylors.

The shoe brand says it aims to give hundreds of tonnes of waste a second-life by turning it into trainers made from recycled plastic bottles, upcycled textiles and reused cotton canvas.

It says its Renew Canvas will have the same feel and look as traditional canvas, despite being made from 100% recycled polyester from used plastic bottles that would otherwise have likely ended up polluting the environment.

Similarly, its Renew Denim shoes will be made from denim jeans that were diverted from landfills, while its Renew Cotton line will be made from cotton canvas waste from manufacturing processes to create a 40% recycled cotton, which will then be blended with polyester.

The Renew Canvas and Renew Denim shoes will hit shelves this summer, followed by the Renew Cotton line in early 2020.

The brand says initial production runs of the new range will be relatively limited, with recycled canvas models being produced in the hundreds of thousands, while Denim and Cotton shoes will be made in the tens of thousands.
