Teesside man fined £350k for illegall waste crimes

A man has been ordered to pay a fine worth £350,000 for waste crimes in Darlington.

Tony Leigh Shepherd pleaded guilty to operating two illegal waste sites.

According to the Environment Agency, he had running a waste transfer facility - illegally deposited, sorted and stored mixed household and industrial waste.

Teesside Crown Court sentenced Mr Shepherd to 12 months in prison and suspended him for two years in 2014.

Andrew Turner, Environment Agency’s Waste and Enforcement Manager for the North East said: "This hearing demonstrates how seriously we take waste crime and we’ll continue to take action against those operating outside of the law and the regulations."

Mr  Shepherd could face a prison sentence if he fails to pay.

He could also be ordered to pay around £1.2 million if the crime is repeated.
