India signs MoUs to boost greener railways

Four agreements have been signed in India to boost the carbon footprint of its railways and cut costs.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to increase co-operation between the Ministry of Power (MoP) and the Ministry of Railways (MoR) for electricity and energy conservation.

The aim is to share knowledge on developments in the power sector to reduce the cost of power to railways.

An MoU was also agreed between the MoR and the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) to co-operate on changing the energy mix and using solar power at railway stations.

The MoR also made an agreement to work together with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) on energy to identify technologies for  efficient use of energy on railways.

The Railway Energy Management Company Limited (REMCL) and the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) agreed to begin energy conservation projects at railway stations.

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhu said the MoUs will provide a framework for future solutions in the power sectors and bring a change to the energy mix used in train stations.
