Vermont power plant shuts down for good

Vermont’s only nuclear power plant has shut down for good as of midday on Monday.

The plant which supplied power to the New England grid produced more than 171 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity over nearly 43 years.

The Governor of Vermont, Peter Shumlin who backed the decision to close the plant said in a statement: “Thanks to investments in renewable energy such as solar, Vermont's energy future is on a different, more sustainable path that is creating jobs, reducing energy costs for Vermonters and slowing climate change.”

Bill Mohl, president of Entergy Wholesale Commodities said economic factors related to the natural gas market in north east America were primary reasons for the shut-down.
