Thames Water could boost its bills by as much as £80 a year to pay for a four billion pound super sewer in London.
The water provider which operates 66,500 miles of sewer is said to have warned its wastewater customers – it has around 14 million of these - by leaflets about the rise. Based on 2011 figures, the £70-80 rise could kick in by 2014 at the earliest.
The Thames Tideway Tunnel will cost £4.1billion and stop excess sewage leaking into the Thames, something Environment Minister Richard Benyon has said is essential to protect the river for future generations.
