Preserving environment is imperative, says OECD

Act now or face the consequences. This is the environmental message from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development who are concerned that despite the current recession, countries aren't preparing themselves for future energy demands.

Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the OECD said: "Greener sources of growth can help governments today as they tackle these pressing challenges. Greening agriculture, water and energy supply and manufacturing will be critical by 2050 to meet the needs of over 9 billion people."

The report warns that despite the current economic climate the world economy is set to quadruple by 2050, which will put major strain on energy and resources. Without new policies and a lower carbon outlook the OECD fear a rise of 50% in greenhouse gas emissions globally and worsening air pollution.
