500,000 UK properties have potential for solar power

An aerial mapping company has calculated that 500,000 properties in the UK have potential for solar power.

Using aerial photography, Bluesky has determined half a million properties have the potential for solar power in the UK. The company also uses 3D computer modelling to decide the suitability of individual properties and the optimum size of solar panels for installation.

Following the recent controversy over feed-in tariff changes, Rachel Tidmarsh, Managing Director of Bluesky International said: "If tariffs are reduced it becomes more important than ever to get an accurate and independent assessment of a property's suitability in order to fully understand the balance between installation costs, energy savings and potential income."

The solar assessment service can also be used for wind turbines and heat pumps.
