Turbine blade breaks off in car park

The blade of a wind turbine broke and crashed to the ground in high winds in County Durham.

The turbine was operating in a Tesco car park in Consett when the blade fell. No-one was injured.

The turbine is not the traditional 'windmill-style' but a vertical axis design, where the main rotor shaft is set vertically, giving the blades a less common shape (see picture above).
