Energise combines knowledge and action into new emission-slashing app

Knowledge doesn't equal power on its own - knowledge combined with action is what's needed to deliver genuinely powerful emissions reductions.

That was the suggestion from Tamsin Alsbury, CEO of Energise Ltd, who told future Net Zero about the release of the company's new app Sustemic, which aims to help individuals calculate their carbon footprint and begin their personal journey towards net zero.

It provides each person with a carbon budget with 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide to use across their lifetime - they can then think about how their actions impact their remaining budget and make choices that limit their emissions output as a result.

It also offers information, prompts and tips to inform people on areas of sustainability that they might not be fully aware of.

Tamsin said: "We're trying to shift the focus away from what's becoming a bit of an 'offset and go' mentality - there's a number of products out on the market at the moment where you can go on, answer a few questions about what your lifestyle is like, find out what your carbon footprint is and just offset it.

"I don't mean to knock it, that's not a terrible thing, it's great people are taking action whatever level that is at, it's better to take action than to not take action, but there's a building body of knowledge out there that says just offsetting is not sufficient.

"We really want to be able to provide people with the knowledge and the support to help them actually start taking action and change their lives - it's really an app to transform the way that people operate so that they can become more sustainable."
