COP26: ‘We need the support to participate effectively’

“[Developing nations] can only be a part of the emission reduction agenda if we are supported financially. We need to get the support to be able to participate effectively.

“As a country we are ready to participate in the global agenda but one thing which is key is technology – but particularly finance.”

That’s the verdict of Dr Richard Muyungi, Director of Environment and VPO of Tanzania, who spoke with future Net Zero on how developing countries want to make a difference and be a part of the climate conversation but the importance of climate finance in making this happen.

Boris Johnson called for more climate finance to committed by developed countries earlier this week at COP26, after the promised $100 billion was not delivered last year and has now been delayed until 2023.

Dr Muyungi commented on this: “We are very concerned that the money, the $100 billion promised in 2020 has now been moved to 2023.

“We have just seen $80 billion pledges in total yesterday – but we do believe that leaders will see their senses increasing in handling their commitments because this is a boat that we’re all sailing in together and we need to work together to ensure that we can save our world and ensure that everybody is on board to act together as a global community.”
