Where is the best area in the UK to own an EV?

More people are taking up electric vehicles (EVs) as the government’s deadline for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 looms – but where are the best places in the country to own one?

Research comparing the number of charging points to the number of EVs registered in areas across the UK has revealed that Coventry is the best place in the UK to own an EV, with 40.86 chargers for every 100 vehicles.

It is well in the lead, with just over one charger per EV in the city – with the study claiming the offer to businesses of a two-month ‘try before you buy’ trial has also helped the number of installations jump up.

The following top five areas were Na h-Eileanan Siar in Scotland, Brighton and Hove, Westminster and the Isle of Anglesey in Wales.

All of these areas had a range between 28 and 38 chargers for every 100 EVs registered.

Although Coventry has the best ratio of charger to EV in the country, Westminster actually has the most public charging points with 1,059.

The worst place to own an EV in the UK is the Isles of Scilly, which has 42 EVs registered but zero public charging points to provide for them. There is a plan to install 28 charging devices set to be announced but currently without a home charger an EV cannot run on the isles.

Stockport, Swindon, Slough and Peterborough make up the remaining top five places with the worst charger to EV ratio, ranging from 0.39 to 0.1 charger per 100 vehicles.

Buckinghamshire was the area with most registered EVs, with 3,750.
