Australian household hardware company to run on 100% renewables by 2025

Australian household hardware company Bunnings has announced it will run on 100% renewable energy by 2025.

The firm, which has already committed to net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, will prioritise energy efficiency measures and solar photovoltaic (PV) installations.

Among the solutions, the hardware giant's plan is to see LED lighting being deployed in all new store builds and the existing store network.

The company said around 150 sites are already using LED lighting, technology which is estimated to reduce a store’s energy consumption by more than 20%.

In addition, the firm has more than 70 solar PV systems across its store network covering more than 28,000 square metres of roof space and generating up to 30% of a store's energy needs.

In the next year, Bunnings has plans to build another 20 new solar PV systems and upgrade the capacity on ten of the existing installations.

Bunnings Managing Director Mike Schneider said: "We recognise that business has an important part to play in reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change. This is a journey we started some time ago, but we know that we have a long way to go.

"We are absolutely committed to finding solutions that benefit our business, our customers and the environment and we are excited about what the future looks like."
