Carrefour pledges to slash 20 megatonnes of emissions from products by 2030

Carrefour has committed to slashing the carbon dioxide emissions of the sold products in its stores by 30%, which is expected to result in 20 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents being avoided.

The new target complements a previous commitment from the French retail giant to reduce its store-related carbon footprint by 40% by 2025 and by 70% before 2050.

To achieve the reduction in emissions, the firm aims to triple its fleet of biomethane trucks in France by 2022, offer more plant-based products and reduce the use of packaging and plastic.

Carrefour has also set up an energy efficiency plan for each store, replaced refrigerants in cold production plants and joined partnerships to produce photovoltaic solar electricity.

The new objectives of the firm have been approved by the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi).
