Biogas plant beefs up dairy farm’s green credentials

A new biogas upgrading plant is expected to significantly reduce methane emissions from a dairy facility in the US.

Wärtsilä's Puregas Solutions has signed a contract to supply a turnkey biogas upgrading plant to an Oregon site, with plans to upgrade an existing anaerobic digester (AD) to produce biomethane.

The new technology will process around 3,100 cubic feet per minute of renewable biogas from the anaerobic digestion of manure from more than 50,000 dairy cows, which will then be taken to California for use as a transportation fuel.

The plant is expected to produce around 81 million British Thermal Units of biomethane per year, enough to power approximately 15,000 households and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 51,000 tonnes.

Jan Molin, Managing Director of Puregas Solutions, said: "This project, which essentially converts the methane gas from animal manure into a sustainable transportation fuel, is environmentally significant and an indicator perhaps of a future trend in biogas upgrading in the agricultural industry."
