Sony commits to go 100% renewable by 2040

Sony has committed to sourcing all of its energy from renewables by 2040.

Renewables currently make up only 7% of the electronics giant's total electricity consumption at its 111 business sites around the world, despite having already gone fully green in Europe - 80% of the group's energy consumption happens in Japan.

The firm says the clean power commitment will cover all electricity used for manufacturing televisions and cameras, as well as its content creation work as moviemaking.

The goal will be achieved through installing distributed capacity, primarily in the form of solar panels on the roofs of its production facilities, in addition to purchasing existing solar facilities and purchasing green-certified power.

It aims to reach a preliminary milestone of sourcing 30% clean power by 2030.

So far this year, global corporations have purchased 7.2GW of clean energy, surpassing last year’s record of 5.4GW.
