Pakistan commits to planting 10 billion trees… sounds oak-ay

Pakistan has launched a campaign to plant 10 billion trees over the next five years.

The nation, which is expected to be severely affected by the effects of climate change, aims to help avoid the droughts and floods associated with global warming by establishing large forests to absorb carbon dioxide.

Prime Minister Imran Khan planted a tree to kick off a one-day ‘Plant for Pakistan’ drive, which makes up part of the wider scheme.

The mini-campaign is planting 1.5 million trees, with free saplings being given out for free at 190 distribution points across the country.

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage people, communities, organisations, businesses and industry to collectively plant trees, battle climate change and reverse environmental degradation.

Government departments and ministries are getting involved with the initiative at their respective offices and headquarters.
