Canada invests $1.4m in smart grid project

The Government of Canada has announced $1.4 million (£0.83m) of investment for a “next generation” smart grid project.

Funded by Natural Resources Canada through its Green Infrastructure Programme and developed by ENMAX Power, the project will enable extra renewable electricity generated by customers to be sent back to Calgary's grid.

The solution is expected to make electricity grids more reliable, laying the conditions for future, small-scale clean energy resources in urban settings, lowering greenhouse gases and removing barriers for consumers to adopt green energy.

Gianna Manes, ENMAX President and CEO said: “This innovative project, the first of its kind in Canada, allows us to explore two-way power flow on a segment of the electrical grid that has not historically been able to support this. By advancing this technology, we will be able to build the resiliency of our grid and enable future customer opportunities.”
