Daimler subsidiary makes first electric truck customers

Daimler subsidiary Freightliner has announced the two first customers to operate its electric trucks in the US.

The vehicle manufacturer will hand over 20 trucks to transportation services provider Penske Truck Leasing and 10 to logistics specialist NFI Industries.

It will also work with the customers on route planning, development of charging infrastructure and service support.

The 730-horsepower Freightliner eCascadia has a range of up to 250 miles and is primarily used to tow articulated trailers, while the smaller Freightliner eM2 is intended for local distribution operations.

It has around 480-horsepower, a range of up to 230 miles and the ability to charge up to 80% in about 60 minutes.

Penske Truck Leasing will receive 10 Freightliner eCascadia heavy-duty trucks for regional delivery and 10 of Daimler's medium-duty eM2 for local operations in the Northwest Pacific and in California.

NFI Industries has bought 10 Freightliner eCascadias for transporting goods around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Tesla plans to put its electric truck into production in 2019.
