Queen takes the crown for stopping plastic waste

The Queen has banned single-use plastic straws, bottles and other cutlery from the royal estates as part of a move to reduce plastic waste.

The new measures will phase out plastic in public areas such as cafes and gift shops and ban it altogether in staff dining rooms.

Internal caterers will also have to start using china plates and glasses instead of unrecyclable, environmentally intensive alternatives.

The announcement comes at a time in which society in general is moving to cut down on plastic use, including in supermarkets, airports and other public places.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: "Across the organisation, the royal household is committed to reducing its environmental impact.

"As part of that, we have taken a number of practical steps to cut back on the use of plastics. At all levels, there's a strong desire to tackle this issue."
