Sussex schools soar towards solar sustainability

Two schools in Sussex have installed solar panels to generate their own clean energy.

The Three Bridges Primary School in Crawley and the Forest School in Horsham have joined the West Sussex County Council Solar Power for Schools programme, which has installed renewable energy systems on 11 schools to date.

It aims to increase this figure to 60 by the end of next year.

Two 50kW systems have been installed at the Three Bridges Upper Site and the Forest School with a 30kW system put into place at the Three Bridges Lower Site.

The total annual saving on energy bills across the sites is expected to be around £4,000, with an estimated  emission reduction of 49 tonnes each year.

Siobhan Denning, Head Teacher at the Forest School, said: "Being able to install a solar system at the school without the up-front cost and procurement hassle was a big attraction for us.

"With energy costs expected to rise in the future, we look forward to reaping the benefit from the solar panels for years to come while giving something positive back to the environment."

A solar powered computer was unveiled at an eco-friendly school in Merseyside earlier this year.
