Centrica completes battery storage unit for council

Centrica has finished installing a battery storage scheme for Gateshead Council.

The 3MW battery project has been designed to store and release energy for the District Energy Centre, which usesĀ a pair of 2MW combined heat and power (CHP) units to power 5,000 homes.

The storage equipment is made up of six units, holding the equivalent of one million AA battery cells and is capable of storing enough power to meet the needs of 3,000 homes for one hour.

It will be used to help meet peaks in local demand and provide electricity through a private wire to council and public buildings.
