Plans for £30m UK energy research, development hub

Plans to build a new energy systems research, development and demonstration site in the UK have been unveiled.

The Integrated Transport Electricity Gas Research Laboratory, or InTEGReL, in Gateshead will allow businesses to test their ideas in real world conditions at a large scale.

It will work with academics and engineers in areas including the decarbonisation of heat, energy storage and transport.

The site will feature smart grid technology, battery storage and research laboratory, domestic appliances as well as hydrogen and CNG refuelling stations.

Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark said: “The InTEGReL project demonstrates how the private sector – working with the UK’s world class Higher Education sector – can take a leading role in helping Britain reach our 2050 emission reduction target.”

It will be operated by Northern Gas Networks (NGN) in collaboration with Northern Powergrid and Newcastle University as well as the EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration (CESI).
