The Haven Power Market Report

The Haven Power Market Report is a weekly pricing report that analyses and explains energy market fluctuations over the past 7 days.

Seasonal Contracts

A mixed story across the curve, with the front season (Winter-17) dropping by around £0.10/MWh in contrast to the remaining secure and promote seasons (Summer-18 to Summer-19) gaining £0.15-£0.20/MWh.

Prompt/Day-ahead Power

Day-ahead baseload prices stayed comparatively low - under £40/MWh for most of the week. Unusually, the most expensive day was Sunday 23^rd; although demand is generally low over the weekend, there was less generation output from wind and solar. Therefore, more expensive generation was required to make up this shortfall.

Imbalance Prices

System prices have been relatively unremarkable over the last week, with no negative prices and a minimum price of £0.95/MWh. The most costly half hour was period 39 on Monday 17^th at £109.99/MWh, as some relatively expensive pumped storage and coal generation was brought on to support the system. The mean price over the week was £37.90/MWh.

Renewables and other

A week of mixed weather in the UK, with much of the country suffering thunderstorms over Monday night/Tuesday morning. Solar generation had a strong start, with a peak output of over 8GW on Monday. However, cloudier conditions in the remainder of the week led to diminished generation. Wind power was relatively productive with a mean output of 5GW over the week. Unfortunately, this dropped to below 2GW on Sunday, causing day-ahead baseload to breach the £40/MWh mark.
