Northern Powergrid awards £50k for community energy schemes

Northern Powergrid has awarded £50,000 for new community energy schemes.

A total of 10 local groups will use a share of the funding which will support projects in the inception stages.

They include providing energy advice to help reduce fuel poverty as well as projects that will raise awareness of sustainable living and encourage design of energy efficient homes.

The Northern Powergrid Seed Fund will also provide expert advice, feasibility studies and meeting spaces.

The company helps keep the lights on for 3.9 million homes and businesses across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Anne-Claire Leydier, Sustainability Manager at Northern Powergrid said: “The move of energy production and energy efficiency from central bodies into communities is a feature of the low carbon economy.

“In energy, as in many other sectors, national policy is undergoing a period of transition so the Seed Fund, which is now in its third year, provides a bit of stability and crucial help for local groups.”
