Sadiq Khan to invest £770m to promote cycling in London

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced an investment worth £154 million per year in the next five years to promote cycling in London.

The money will be part of Transport for London's draft Business Plan being published later this week. City Hall claims £770 million will be spent on infrastructure and initiatives to promote cycling by 2021/22.

The new funding is almost double the £79 million per year spent over the last mayoral term and is on a par with Denmark and the Netherlands.

The investment is part of the mayor’s plans to tackle air pollution in the city.

Mr Khan said: "Making cycling safe and easier can provide huge benefits for us all – improving our health, cleaning up our toxic air and helping tackle congestion.

“With record amounts of money now committed for cycling in London, we will continue to work over the coming months developing further detailed plans for making cycling a safe and obvious choice for Londoners of all ages and backgrounds.”
