Largest museum in Australia goes green

The largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere is to get an energy efficiency retrofit.

The Museum Victoria in Australia is to get a sustainable upgrade from technology giant Siemens at the cost of €4.2 million (£3.61m). This will pay itself back over a seven-year period in electricity savings.

The State Government of Victoria awarded the contract as part of a wider movement to make the operations of all museums more sustainable.

As the 80,000 square metre Museum Victoria is actually made up of three individual museums and two large storage spaces, it was a priority to upgrade.

Siemens will install a new building management system to optimise how energy, heating and lighting is used. Water use will be reduced and the energy consumption of the chillers used on the site will be managed via a demand flow system.

Lighting throughout the building will be changed to the latest LED technology.
