Highest energy bill is £361 more than the cheapest

The most expensive energy deal in the UK is £361 more expensive than the cheapest.

That is according to consumer group TheBigDeal.com, who have revealed the ten worst tariffs on the market. The most expensive is from Co-operative Energy at £1,184, compared to Avro Energy's price of £823. This is a difference of nearly 44%.

The results suggest that up to 2.3 million people may be paying more than they need to for their energy.

Four of the 'Big Six' have a tariff in the worst ten - npower, Scottish Power, SSE and EDF each have a place.

All of the named and shamed tariffs are 'cheque or cash tariffs', which are often much more expensive than the equivalent direct debit versions.

Edward Molyneux, Head of Research at TheBigDeal.com, said: "Half of the ten worst deals in the country are from the Big Six which means millions of people are on the very worst deals out there. What’s worse is that the Big Six call these deals “standard” which hugely misleading.

"The Government and regulator should force the Big Six to rename these tariffs as “emergency tariffs” to encourage people who are on them to act and get off them as soon as possible."
