US promotes safety in wind industry

Government agencies and wind energy experts teamed up in Chicago to promote safety in the industry.

More than 30 professionals attended the Suzlon training centre and were taught how to climb a turbine, perform self-rescue and go through rescue scenarios.

The three-day programme provided both classroom and practical training for the attendees.

Trainees were given hands-on instruction on climbing techniques and accessing turbines from standing and suspended positions.

The classroom education covered basics including wind turbine generation and operation, electrical safety and emergency response and weather conditions.

American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan said: “The wind industry is gaining momentum and added 23,000 new jobs in 2014.

“That underscores the importance of worker health and safety.”
