Work starts on £25m Scottish green energy centre

The construction of a green energy centre worth £25 million has started in the east of Scotland.

The facility, located in Guardbridge, is being delivered by St Andrews University and is part of its plans to become the UK’s first carbon neutral university.

It will use wood from sustainable local sources to generate power and pump hot water to the campus.

More than 225 jobs will be created during construction.

John Swinney, Scottish Deputy First Minister said: “The project will deliver significant carbon savings as well as financial savings to the University.

“The Scottish Government is using all the levers at its disposal, including through European Funding initiatives, to help regenerate areas and maximise employment opportunities that help achieve sustainable economic growth.”
