Solar goes bananas

Solar goes bananas

The shipping company responsible for handling 95% of the UK’s bananas is being powered by renewable energy.

MMD Ltd, which imports more than half a million tonnes of produce every year, has a 1.16MW rooftop solar system (pictured) at its fruit and vegetable facility in Portsmouth.

EvoEnergy installed 4,500 panels on three of the refrigeration warehouses, which generates an average of around 3,000kWh of electricity every day.

James Sutton, Project Manager at EvoEnergy said: “The finished system is enormous and is already delivering impressive savings.

"It generated more than 2MW in power in one day in February recently so when summer arrives on the South Coast the panels should perform even better.”
