Tap hydropower potential, World Bank tells Nepal

Nepal is being urged to tap its hydropower potential to solve the nation’s energy crisis.

The World Bank said it is a “core task” for the country, which still faces power cuts of at least eight hours a day. It will also help in boosting public income through electricity trade with neighbouring India, it added.

During a three-day official visit to Nepal, Annette Dixon, the Bank’s Vice President for South Asia discussed the government’s development priorities and pledged to support the nation’s reforms.

She said: “Nepal has the chance to build critical infrastructure, including major hydropower projects. This will draw in investment funds, improve the climate for businesses, help create jobs and reduce poverty as well as boost shared prosperity in Nepal.”
