Disclaimer - this is an experiment for ELN and we welcome your thoughts and comments! What information would you like to know? Do these stats make sense or can you spot an inconsistency?

So, where is all this information from?

This data comes from DECC's record of sub-national electricity consumption for 2012, grouped by local authority.

It's the most up-to-date, full set of statistics for this we could find. (Here at ELN we can't wait for smart meters - or perhaps we should be careful what we wish for...)

Our interactive map shows two averages for home energy use - the top one is per consumer, the bottom one is per meter. That middle statistic in the box is for industrial energy users. All of the numbers are in kilowatt hours (kWh).

How do you shape up?

Once you've done checking how well you do, how does your region measure up against the rest of the country?

Check it against the national average - over a year, the average domestic electricity consumption per meter - both ordinary or Economy 7 - in Great Britain was 4,014 kWh.

For non-domestic energy users, the yearly average was  69,146 kWh.
